Bio

Prof. Marra did his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at Canada’s University of British Columbia (UBC). These include a Bachelor’s (1987-1992), Doctor of Pharmacy (1993-1995), a Ph.D. in Health Economics (1999-2004) and a teaching degree (2005-2006). Before completing his Ph.D., Prof. Marro worked as a pharmacist for the Children's & Women's Health Centre of British Columbia (1995-1996) and the Vancouver General Hospital (1996-2000). His research career began in 2004 as an Assistant Professor in UBC’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences becoming a tenured Associate Professor in 2008 and full Professor in 2012. In 2014 he moved to the Memorial University of Newfoundland University to become its Dean of the School of Pharmacy. From 2016 to 2024 he was Dean of the School of Pharmacy at the University of Otago in New Zealand. In April 2024 he became Pro-Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences at Curtin University.

Research Summary

Prof. Marra’s research focuses on improving patient outcomes and healthcare efficiency through patient-centred care and pharmacist-led interventions. Key areas include understanding treatment preferences for conditions like metastatic breast cancer and rheumatoid arthritis, assessing the economic burden of diseases such as asthma and diabetes, and enhancing drug safety and effectiveness. He also has led projects on multidisciplinary care for chronic conditions, eHealth tools, and rural immunisation programs, alongside efforts to improve health policy and education in health economics.
